MCL Treatment & Recovery

MCL injuries are primarily treated conservatively. Grade I-II tears require RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation), bracing to limit valgus stress, and physical therapy to restore strength/mobility. Grade III tears (complete rupture) may need surgery if combined with ACL/meniscus injuries. Recovery spans 2-6 weeks (mild) to 3-6 months (severe). Rehab focuses on progressive exercises, proprioception, and functional training. Return to sports hinges on stability and muscle recovery. Untreated tears risk chronic instability or osteoarthritis. Long-term outcomes are favorable with adherence to rehab; surgery is rare unless multiligament damage exists.
